MARAS AND MORAY HIKE ITINERARY
Maras and Moray Hike 1 day begins with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Our private vehicle will transfer you to the trailhead located in Moray. Once there, you will start with a guided tour of Moray Inca site and learn about the purpose of construction.
The ancient Incas took four enormous natural depressions in the landscape and sculpted them into several levels of agricultural terraces that served, hundreds of years ago, as an experimental agricultural station for the development of a different strain of crops. This was possible because of the discovery of a fascinating phenomenon: the climates of different ecological zones were present at a single site.
After visiting this attraction, we will continue on to Maras colonial village, enjoying breathtaking views of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. This section involves a two-hour hike, passing fertile plains and farms. Once there, You will stroll down the narrow streets of Maras, seeing its fine examples of colonial doorways and also have a chance to buy some snacks.
we will continue our hike for another two hours until we reach the Maras Saltpans. The Maras salt mines which are also very well known by local people as “salineras” are about 4000 small pools with an average area of 5 m², constructed in a slope of the “Qaqawiñay” mountain. People fill up the pools during the dry season every 4 days, with salty water emanating from a natural spring located on the top of the complex, so that when water evaporates the salt contained in it will slowly solidify. That process will be carried out approximately during one month until a considerable volume of solid salt is obtained.
Finally, our Maras and Moray day hike experience comes to an end with a visit to this fantastic place, you will then be transferred back to the hotel in Cusco or the sacred valley.
