The Sacred Valley Tourist Ticket

Most of the archaeological sites in Cusco (except Machu Picchu, Qoricancha and the natural Maras Salt Mines) require a tourist ticket (Boleto Turistico) that can be purchased at the office of COSITUC located in Cusco (103 Avenida del Sol) or at the first attraction you visit. A 10-day pass allows access to the sites and other museums in Cusco and costs PEN S/130 (USD $46) or PEN S/70 for a student under 18 years old.

We recommend getting the 2-day pass for the Sacred Valley circuit, which cost PEN S/70 (USD $25). This in case you won’t visit the Incan sites around Cusco.

Discover the farming laboratory of Moray, Maras salt mines and Chinchero textile center.

The Maras and Moray private tour is a fantastic option to explore part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. You will enjoy spectacular views of the sacred valley mountain ranges, and the green valleys with seasonal crops. On our Maras and Moray half day tour, you will be able to learn about agriculture, textiles, and the history of the Incas.

Our private Maras and Moray tour will start with a pickup from your hotel around 8 a.m. and travel to the archeological site of Moray. Our scenic drive from Cusco to Moray takes about one hour and 20 minutes. During this short journey, you will enjoy the sacred valley landscapes with lush yellow fields of wheat, and some countryside villages. Later, you will arrive at the mystic farming laboratory of Moray. The Incan site of Moray will show us four natural depressions, with a series of circular terraces built like an amphitheater. The Incas built and adjusted these terraces in the shape of a bowl. Most archaeologist conclude that Moray was built to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops.

After this, you will keep driving for about half an hour to the impressive salt mines of Maras. Even though the village is from Spanish colonial times, this is known as a former salt-producer center that predates the Inca times. Here, one can find more than 3,000 salt pans built on the hillside of the mountain. These pools are filled daily by a salty spring water that comes out from the Mountains. The Maras salt mines produces pink and brown color salt, which are distributed in the sacred valley markets. This natural attraction is unique in the whole region, therefore, is perfect for you if you wish to see something different from the ruins.

The last destination to visit will be Chinchero. This is a small Andean community situated about 30 km from Cusco at 3,750 meters, on the plains of Anta. The ancient Incan site offers a fantastic view of the Sacred Valley and other farming villages. The name of Chinchero doesn’t have any meaning, however, the villagers theorize its origin to the rainbow. That’s because during the rainy season there are many rainbows in the surroundings of the Village.

This place is very famous because its typical Sunday market, which mostly gathers indigenous people from different rural communities. You can also see foreign visitors getting textiles in direct interaction with local weavers. If you want to learn a bit more how their colorful textiles are made, then you have to visit the weaving centers. There, you can experience a demonstration on how colorful textiles from Alpaca wool are made by hand.

Finally, you will explore the small archeological site and also visit the Catholic Church, which lays over the Inca construction. At the end you will return to Cusco and drop you off at your hotel.
